History

Dave Clark started playing drums at the age of 17. His first band was Across The Frontier which was a soft rock band which went nowhere. Next he formed a band with the bass player from across the frontier and asked Tim the guitarist to join. After going through a few singers, Dave Goodchild joined fresh from college. The bass player left because of the noise factor and another Dave joined the band on bass. Tim left to have babies and three of us were left. The band had gained a name of Freeloader. It played late sixties early seventies rock, e.g. Free, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zep. The bass player moved to Bristol and Dave Goodchild’s wife Lydia had a baby and Dave Clark got a new job. Because of the amount of time needed for a rock band both Dave's decided to form Blencathra, where we can put songs together quickly.

Dave Goodchild started playing the guitar at age 17 and for his 18th Birthday got a Squire Telecaster and a Marshall practice amp. Needless to say he didn’t look back. Many amps and bands later Dave has expanded his guitar collection to include an early 60’s German Jazz guitar (pictured above), a 70’s Japanese 12 string acoustic, a Korean electro-acoustic, a Fender Flame electric guitar (very rare and very tasty !), a 50’s Portuguese mandolin and a Romanian Octave Mandola as well as the Squire Tele. He has to date never sold a guitar. The main amp is a Marshall JCM900 2X12 valve combo, which doesn’t get many outings on the folk circuit. Dave was the singer and guitarist in Freeloader with Dave Clark where the Marshall was essential to be heard over Dave’s drumming. Since fatherhood loomed has found the gentler pace of Blencathra to be a much more civilized way to get out and play music.
